To everyone's surprise, Stano moved out on his own and enrolled in a computer school shortly following graduation. He graduated the program with flying colors and then began work at a local hospital. Weeks after being hired, however, he was back to his old ways and got caught stealing from the purses of fellow employees. He was fired and then started a patten of bouncing around from one job to the next before moving back in with his parents.
Gerald struck out on his own again, this time moving to New Jersey. There, he began dating a young woman of limited mental ability. When she became pregnant, her father came after Stano with a gun making demands that he take care of the situation. Gerald agreed to procure his girlfriend an abortion and shortly afterward began using drugs and drinking regularly. Again, his parents stepped in to help out and convinced their troubled son to move him to Ormond Beach, Florida, with them while they cared for his grandmother.
Gerald's established pattern of frequently losing jobs due to absence and theft continued. He made one last attempt to get his life back together in 1975, when he quit drugs and got sober. It was during this period that Stano met a 22-year-old hair stylist. They fell in love and were married on June 21, 1975, at a local church. He even had stable employment at a service station owned by his new father-in-law.
As with all his previous attempts to begin anew, this one failed, and in grand style. Within mere months of the wedding, Stano was drinking heavily and began beating his young wife. Less than a year after it all began, his marriage, job, and independent life were over; he had moved back in with his parents.
